About the Role

This is a flexible position and can be done remotely as well. The candidate will be responsible for the Foundation's broad range of activities dealing with content and messaging, including development and production of information and communications that can be delivered through online, emails, videos, print distribution as well as other channels of communication. The Communications Associate will also lead the Center's social media campaigns, develop and consolidate relations with the media, draft media releases, train Foundation's staff in external communications, etc. The ideal candidate should a Bachelor's degree in Communications, Journalism, marketing, sociology or related field. Experience with digital communications, including excellent writing and editing abilities are very essential.

Requirements

As our nonprofit Volunteer Communications Associate, you will be responsible for overseeing the communications and public relations process. Specific requirements include:

  • Communication Skills: Strong written and verbal communication skills are essential for effectively conveying the organization's message to various stakeholders, including volunteers, donors, and the general public. You should be able to write clear and compelling content for newsletters, social media posts, press releases, and other communication materials.

  • Marketing and Social Media Knowledge: Familiarity with marketing principles and social media platforms is important for promoting the nonprofit's mission and engaging with its audience. Understanding how to create engaging content, use analytics tools, and implement social media strategies will help drive the organization's communication efforts.

  • Interpersonal Skills: As a communications associate, you may interact with volunteers, donors, board members, and other stakeholders. Strong interpersonal skills are necessary for building relationships, collaborating with team members, and representing the organization professionally.

  • Nonprofit Sector Knowledge: Having a basic understanding of the nonprofit sector and its unique challenges is beneficial. Familiarize yourself with the organization's mission, goals, and programs, as well as the broader social and environmental issues it addresses.

  • Writing and Editing: Strong writing and editing skills are vital for creating and proofreading various communication materials, such as blog posts, website content, fundraising appeals, and donor correspondence. Attention to detail and the ability to convey complex information in a concise and engaging manner are important attributes.

  • Digital Tools: Proficiency in using digital tools and technology, such as content management systems, email marketing platforms, graphic design software, and customer relationship management (CRM) systems, can greatly enhance your effectiveness as a communications associate.

  • Time Management and Organizational Skills: Nonprofit organizations often have multiple ongoing projects and tight deadlines. Being able to prioritize tasks, manage your time effectively, and work independently will contribute to your success in this role.

  • Flexibility and Adaptability: Nonprofits often experience changing priorities and unexpected challenges. Being adaptable, open to feedback, and willing to take on new responsibilities or adjust strategies as needed is important in this dynamic environment.

  • Passion for the Cause: Demonstrating a genuine passion for the organization's mission and values can be a significant asset. Nonprofits often seek individuals who are motivated by the desire to make a positive impact and are committed to advancing the organization's goals.

  • Education and Experience: While specific educational requirements vary, a bachelor's degree in communication, marketing, public relations, or a related field is often preferred. Relevant experience in communications, public relations, marketing, or nonprofit work can also be beneficial.
